President
of Vyapar Mandal and Rajya Sabha member Banwari Lal
Kanchal said that the traders have no other option left
rather than to go on strike as the state government is not
interested in hearing their plea.
“We
want the state government to rationalise the taxes under
the new system on par with other states,” he said.
Kanchal claimed that the new tax regime would
severely hit the leather, food grain and garment
industries in the state as the rate of taxes in other
adjoining states was much less than what has been proposed
here.
The
Gur mandis of western Uttar Pradesh, which provides
jaggery worth Rs 2 crore daily, will remain closed
indefinitely from January 1 to register its protest
against the imposition of VAT.
The
Naveen Mandi Vyapar Mandal has decided to close the mandi
for indefinite time, Vice President of the association
Shiva Kumar Kallu said.
“While
in other states jaggery is exempted from VAT, it has been
imposed in Uttar Pradesh. So in protest against it, the
Gur mandi will remain closed indefinitely from January
1,” he added.
