Rajasthan - Petrol dealers to shutdown outlets on Aug 20 over VAT rates

Retail petroleum dealers in the state on Monday said petrol stations would be closed on August 20, as part of the Rajasthan shutdown call given by a traders union seeking parity in Value-Added Tax rates.

The Sakal Udyog Vyapar Sangarsh Samiti had given a call for a bandh on August 20 and 21 to push for parity in VAT rates, Rajasthan Petrol Dealers Association President Suneet Bagai said in a statement here.

There are "discrepencies" in VAT rates among the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, and it was difficult to match the rates for the benefit of customers, Bagai said.

BJP President Rajnath Singh had asked states ruled by the party to reduce cess levied on retail fuel sales after the UPA government raised the prices in June. However, the Raje government in the state was still indecisive on the matter.
