"We
have been demanding for the last 11 months to abolish VAT
on sports goods as done in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar
Pradesh, the major competitors to the industry here",
Ravinder Dheer, convenor of the "Maha Sammelan"
of sports goods manufacturers and traders of the state
told reporters.
Although, in principle, the state government agreed on the
demand in last July, nothing has been done so far, he
alleged.
He claimed that the industry had incurred huge losses last
year, especially after abolition of VAT in Uttar Pradesh.
Due to four per cent VAT in the state, domestic customers
were buying materials from Meerut.
Many of the over 400 units in the city were on the verge
of closure, he added.
