United Kingdom - Private school fees 'should carry VAT

Parents would have to pay VAT on private school fees under plans drawn up by a think-tank close to Labour.

The Fabian Society suggested that the levy, which could be much as £2,500 a year extra for every child, would raise money for state schools in poor areas.

"Putting VAT on private school fees could finance an opportunity fund to tackle educational disadvantage," said Sunder Katwala, the society's general secretary, adding that the plan could be adopted by any of the main parties.
