Groups
including the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the
Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the
Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) have called for
VAT to be reduced.
The
current rate of VAT on building repair and maintenance
work stands at 17.5 per cent. The coalition has called for
it to be reduced to five per cent, according to a
statement from the FMB.
Environmental
concerns are also a prominent cause of the coalition's
discontent.
Yvonne
Orgill, chief executive of the BMA, said: "It is
vital that collectively we encourage householders to
ensure their homes are fit for purpose and as energy and
water efficient as possible.
"Other
countries that employ this practice [of cutting VAT] have
proven and it is one way for Government to reach its aim
of cutting carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050."
This
follows recent criticism of the government by the FMB for
not taking the construction industry seriously.
People
considering renovating their homes should consider their
self-storage solutions to protect their goods.
