German Finance Ministry plans to abolish VAT reductions - report

Germany's Finance Ministry plans to abolish reductions on value-added taxes (VAT) granted to certain products under current legislation, magazine Der Spiegel reported, citing a document the ministry transmitted to the parliament's committee of finance.

In many cases the VAT reductions are no longer based on 'valid grounds', the report cited the document as saying.

In Germany, a reduced VAT rate of 7 pct applies to some 50 products and services considered to serve common welfare.

These include groceries, books and newspapers.

The regular VAT rate is 19 pct in Germany.
