The Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has announced that a tax amnesty period is to be introduced from the 15th of this month to the 16th of November.

“Cabinet has therefore endorsed a proposal by FIRCA for a tax amnesty program from the 15th of October to the 16th of November 2007 in order to assist taxpayers in the business community as well as individuals who have tax issues outstanding with FIRCA.

“Taxpayers who have overdue tax as well as Hotel Turnover Tax, Gambling Turnover Tax, Land Sales Tax and Value Added Tax will be exempted from paying penalties associated with such tax.

“There will be no prosecution and there will be no penalty,” said Chaudhry.

Chaudhry also added that the tax amnesty will also apply to those who have not filed their tax returns with FIRCA.

“I am also pleased to announce that the Tax Amnesty will also apply to taxpayers who have not filed their tax returns with FIRCA.

“Even tax payers who have not been filing tax returns consistently will be exempted from penalty.
