Canada - Tilson applauds GST cut

David Tilson, Conservative MP for Dufferin-Caledon, has applauded the federal government on its further reduction of the Goods and Services Tax to five per cent, which became effective on January 1st.

"2008 will be less taxing for consumers here in Dufferin-Caledon and throughout Canada," said Mr. Tilson.

"Our Government promised Canadians that we would reduce the G.S.T. to five per cent and we have delivered by beginning this reduction on New Year's Day. The cut will assist in improving consumer confidence, encourage business growth, and strengthen the Canadian economy."

He said the two-stage reduction from 7 per cent will mean significant individual savings:

• A family purchasing a new $300,000 home will save $3,840;

• A family spending $10,000 on home renovations will save $200;

• A family spending $30,000 on a new vehicle will save $600 in G.S.T.

Mr. Tilson noted that since forming the government two years ago, the Harper Conservatives have reduced the overall tax burden for Canadians and businesses, bringing taxes to their lowest level in nearly half a century.

"Our Government has established a proud legacy of tax relief for Canadians," he said.

"This is a tremendous achievement that benefits all Canadians and demonstrates our Government's commitment to putting Canadians first by keeping our promises to them."
