Ian Howcroft of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters
says the sector is being hammered by the high dollar and
economic slowdown in the U.S.
He says a harmonized tax would help immensely by
reducing the cost of doing business in Ontario and by
cutting product costs.
Peter Woolford, with the Retail Council of Canada, says
pretty much every Ontario business is in favour of
harmonization.
He says he knows it can be a tough sell politically,
but now is the time for Ontario to reconsider the idea.
Premier Dalton McGuinty has said he would look at
harmonization if families don't end up paying more for
basic essentials.
