Australia to review GST on fuel price

The Australian government will review whether the goods and services tax charged on top of the petrol excise should be scrapped.

The ruling Labor party has strongly criticised the Opposition Leader's plan to cut petrol excise by five cents a litre.

But the Government has confirmed its tax inquiry will consider the interaction between the GST and fuel excise.

The Community Services Minister Jenny Macklin says a review of all areas of tax is long overdue.
