West
Bengal government is committed to bring in Goods &
Services Tax (GST) in the state by 2010. For an
effective GST regime at the state level all the indirect
taxes would be merged and there would be single tax
structure.
“We
are looking to develop a suitable software for the
implementation of the GST in the state by 2010 which would
bring an end to multiplicity problem and cascading effect of
the indirect taxes,” said HK Dwivedi, commissioner of
commercial taxes, government of West Bengal.
The
e-payment facility would be implemented from May, 2008 and the
State bank of India have offered to provide the services to
the tax payers.
“We
would implement e-payment facility by May with SBI having
agreed to provide the facility and we are also in talks with
three other public sector banks who could be roped in for
future,” he added.
Commenting
about the commercial tax collection for the fiscal, the
commissioner said that it is expected to grow by 16 percent.
