Exporters
received this pat on their back from the union external
affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee who is well aware of
exporters’ problems since his days as commerce minister
in the early eighties and in his present capacity as the
chairman of several committees of the empowered group of
ministers.
Responding to exporters’
complaints on non-refund of VAT and several local taxes on
exportable goods, the minister said such problems are
likely to be resolved with the introduction of the unified
Goods and Services
Tax (GST), slated to come into force from
April 1, 2010.
The minister said the core
committee of secretaries, which has been formed for
coordination in infrastructure development in the country,
is deliberating on different blueprints for infrastructure
improvement. He was speaking at EEPC India’s (formerly
Engineering Export Promotion Council) export awards presentation
ceremony, held on Saturday.
The awards were presented to
exporters for their achievement in 2006-07 when Indian
engineering exports grew 35% to touch a level of $26.49
billion.
