At a convention of
traders’ from all parts of the State on taxations
organised here recently, FAOTA General Secretary said,
“we have become very apprehensive of details of the
coming system being kept in the dark.
The government should apprise us about the proposed tax
to enable us to have our say at least in the matter
before it takes a final shape.”
The provisions of Value Added Tax (VAT) was made so
complicated and cumbersome that most of the officials of
Commercial Tax Department failed to comprehend it fully,
even though four to five years had passed since its
introduction, Mr. Mohanty said.
Traders urged State Finance Minister Prafulla Ghadai to
ensure that traders and entrepreneurs did not face any
hardship like in VAT regime because of complications of
statutes.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ghadai said it might not
be possible to impose GST in 2010 and the State
government would consult stakeholders before going ahead
with the proposed Central taxation system.
Earlier Finance Minister expressed his concerns over
dismal collection of taxes during current fiscal.
“The tax collection is disappointing. By this time tax
collection should have reached between 18 per cent and
22 per cent. However, the tax collection has been
estimated at 3.02 per cent now.”
“Collection of entry tax, entertainment tax and overall
VAT has dried up. Industrial bodies are taking plea of
recession, but everybody must have to pay taxes to reach
the target,” Mr. Ghadai said.
