GST introduction needs States’ help

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday sought the cooperation of all political parties ruling various States to enable introduction of the proposed Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April 1, 2010, which would lead to “a sustained rise in tax revenue”.

Replying to the debate in the Lok Sabha on the Union budget for 2009-10, Mr. Mukherjee said: “The introduction of the GST in 2010-11 is expected to bring a sustained rise in the tax revenue and here comes [the importance of] the cooperation of all sides belonging to this House.”

Mr. Mukherjee noted that he was in touch with the State finance ministers of the empowered group which is working in close cooperation for introduction of the proposed GST, a combined levy that would replace the value added tax (VAT), excise duty and service tax.

“But if every section of the House cooperates, it will be possible for the government to introduce the GST from April 1, 2010,” the Finance Minister said while pointing out that the uniform and combined levy would substantially help in meeting the revenue challenges which are not only of this government but of the nation as a whole.
