GST meet put off to Aug 22

The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on Value Added Tax (VAT) will meet here on August 22 to discuss issues relating to the implementation of the proposed goods and services tax (GST) system.

The meeting was originally slated for Thursday, but will now happen on Saturday, sources familiar with the developments said. The committee had already sent to the Centre “a roadmap for GST in India.” This includes the outline of the proposed GST model.

A dual GST, to be levied concurrently by the Centre and the State governments, has been proposed. The Budget for 2006-07 had indicated that GST regime could possibly commence from the financial year 2010-11.
