State governments will cooperate with the Centre to
implement the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with effect
from April 1, 2011, the Empowered Committee of State
Finance Ministers (ECSFM) Chairman Asim Dasgupta said
after a meeting with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
It was earlier proposed
to be implemented with effect from April 1, 2010 but the target could not be met
due to lack of consensus among states as well as Centre on wide range of issues
relating to its structure.
He said ECSFM would meet next week to discuss issues relating to GST.
