Budget 2012: Thomas Cook India's expectations for the travel sector

With a 170 year legacy in the Travel & Tourism industry, Thomas Cook (India) Ltd has been a pioneer with our people related initiatives too. Given the need to build talent for sustainable development of the industry, Budget 2012 offers a unique opportunity for impactful and effective reforms.

With the objective of building a talent base for the Industry, here are our recommendations:

- Abolish service tax on travel educational courses: Given the importance of education and training, especially in a service sector like Travel & Tourism, we would appreciate a removal of service tax on educational courses that we offer. At 10.33% this is a heavy surcharge, resulting in higher cost for students interested in joining this sector.

- For driving talent management in organizations, make ESOPs attractive by favourable taxation. We would recommend reduction or elimination of taxation at the time of exercise.
