Kerala - Slash in VAT sought

The 21st annual general body meeting of the Kerala Small Scale Soap Manufacturers Association has requested the State government to cut the Value-Added Tax (VAT) on washing soaps and powders and toilet soaps manufactured in the State from 12.5 per cent to 4 per cent so as to protect the industry.

The VAT on products of multinational companies (MNCs) and soap manufactured in the small-scale sector is 12.5 per cent. The MNCs use machines to manufacture soaps, but in the small-scale sector these are completely handmade, a press release said. The MNCs offered only 5 per cent job opportunities as compared to the small-scale sector.

It warned of a strong protest if its demand was not met.
