Kannan seeks revocation of enhanced VAT in Puducherry

The hike in the Value Added Tax imposed by the Puducherry government should be revoked as the Union Territory is still recovering from the impact of the Thane cyclone, senior Congress leader and member of Rajya Sabha from Puducherry, P Kannan, has said. Merchants in the Union Territory and the commercial sector had been hit with the rise in VAT on various consumer products, Kannan told reporters. He said the government could instead concentrate on recovering dues that had mounted in payment of sales tax by a section of merchants.
