Rajasthan - HC stays VAT on hostel food

The high court on Tuesday stayed a VAT notice issued to a private university seeking tax recovery on the food supplied in the hostel mess under the Rajasthan Value Added Tax Act.

The interim order restraining commissioner, commercial taxes was issued by Justice Dalip Singh on a petition filed by Gyan Vihar University.

Counsel Madhav Mitra told the court that the food and commodities sold in the hostel mess do not come under the definition of 'commodities' under RVAT.
