Jaya wants Tamil Nadu exempted from food bill

Picking holes in the Centre's Food Security Bill, TN chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to exempt the state from its purview. She said the draft was "replete with confusion and inaccuracy" and asked the Centre not to "encroach into the domains of the states".

In a letter to the PM, she said: "In a federal structure like ours where the states are in close and direct contact with the people, the choice of designing and implementing popular welfare schemes is at best left to the states."
