The state government has decided to examine measures in
order to bring down Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum
products to provide relief to citizens from the recent
petrol price hike.
Speaking to TOI, chief minister Digambar Kamat said that
he has asked for details of VAT on petroleum products in
other states to examine the possibilities of bring down
VAT in the state. "I will get the details on Tuesday.
After that, the government will study and take a
decision," said Kamat.
Recently oil companies have increased petrol prices by 1.82 per
litre, which drew criticism from all sections of society.
The state government in June reduced VAT on petroleum products by two percent.
The decision resulted in petrol price being reduced by 1.50 and diesel by 73
paisa.
The state unit of the Congress party has also decided to request the state
government to reduce petrol prices.
Speaking to TOI, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Subhash Shirodkar said
that he felt petrol and diesel prices should not be increased and steps must be
taken to avoid inflicting an additional burden on the common man. "We will
request the state government to give some relief to the common man by bringing
down VAT on petroleum products," Shirodkar said.
