Traders of coastal district organised a meeting against
Value Added Tax (VAT) in the city on Friday. The
government was collecting VAT on garments from July this
year which was nowhere in the country, they said.
Though the traders observed relay fasts, bandhs and
expressed their protests and represented the matter to
the public representatives, the government has not
responded. The businessmen resolved to intensify the
agitation after January 15, if the government did not
exempt them from VAT.
